2018 Happy New Year

Hello Friends,

2017 is on the way out. It’s been a year of cultural shifts. Some changes were overdue and others were less welcome. I found a Pinterest pin to inspire the start to a new year.

Being an Australian, I love to leave my outback home and head to the beach during the holidays. Soon, I hope to spend a day at the ocean, getting my feet wet, breathing in the healthy, salty air, but not like this—

2017 Merry Christmas

Hello Friends,

It’s Christmas time again.
An angel’s smile.
A word of cheer.
A prayer for peace.

Love is a precious gift, and we can make a difference to each other’s lives.

"The Gold Wrapping Paper" is an inspirational Christmas story about a little girl with a big heart. She didn’t live a long time but her Christmas gift changed her father. Every time I watch the video, tears collect in my eyes. How about you?

"The Gold Wrapping Paper" is a beautiful tale about love and gratitude. There's a field of neuroscience that researches how gratitude changes the brain and can make us happier. Feel joy.  Christmas is a time of giving and may the spirit of generosity bless you too.

I wish, I wish,
to watch "A Christmas Prince",
on Television.

“It’s the low-budget Christmas movie that’s so bad it’s good and people all around the world are falling in love with it.”—News.com.au

Take a look at the Trailer.

“A Christmas Prince” was released in November 2017 by Netflix. The television movie has been a surprise success, and the critics have come out to say how terrible it is.
“I rolled my eyes so hard at this that I pulled a muscle.”—Youtube commentator

Netflix tweeted that there are 53 people who have watched “A Christmas Prince” for 18 days in a row. Oh well, falling in love and happy-ever-afters are more cheerful entertainment than watching the current news cycle.

Wishing you an enjoyable weekend.

Older Romance Heroines with D.D. Line

Older romance heroines…

“Do they lose the desire to be wooed, to be seduced?
Can they be part of a significant romance story?”

Hello Friends,

This week it’s my pleasure to welcome Australian author, D.D. Line back to the blogger site. D.D. joins us today with a guest post about love and growing older, and passion taking on another meaning.

Guest Blog with D.D.

The ability to fall in love can happen at any stage of life. Yes, there’s a different intensity, a different focus of passion and need, but those fluttery moments where you’ve swallowed a thousand tapdancing butterflies, and your speech turns to incoherent babble never fade.

In our teens, we feel love and romance so deeply. We might fall in and out of love every other day of the week, but our current crush means the world to us. They are our hopes, our dreams, our everything. And when said crush rejects us, or worse, has no idea we even exist, the devastation is real – until the next crush comes along.

As we mature, so do our ideals of love. We fall just as intensely, just as hopefully, but love becomes about our significant other and the relationship itself, not just self-love. Mother Nature has a helping hand in this. At a basic level, physical passion and love can lead to procreation, and the intensifying of love between partners as they love, nurture, and protect their family. To build a life with someone who loves us as much as we love them is a level of happiness many wish to obtain.

And after the children grow and begin lives (and romances) of their own, a different form of love evolves. Tenderness, caring, the dreams of growing old together, and learning about each other all over again. They can also send our hearts fluttering all over again too. We never lose that desire to be wooed, to be seduced, to be desired, even if that passion takes on another meaning over the years.

Yes, as we mature, we love to vanish into the unfolding romance of a younger woman and remember the passion we felt when we were a similar age. Some of us may cringe when we remember the crushes of our teens, and some of us smile fondly when we recall that first one-sided romance. But there are those who want to read about characters our age, to prove to ourselves and others that characters in their forties, sixties, and beyond can have those magical moments we had in our teens and as young women. We still want to be swept off our feet, (perhaps with a gentler touch) and we want to feel loved, desired, and part of a significant romance story. We want to read about characters who reflect our changing emotions, needs, and lifestyles. We want to know that romance endures.

The romances of characters in their twenties and thirties will always be popular, and there will always be readers of all ages wishing to devour these romances, myself included. But isn’t it about time the more mature romances had a place too?

Wonder Woman's Amazon Warriors get a costume change

Hollywood - The Amazons from the island of Themyscira change into Bikini Babe Warriors for the Justice League movie.

Hello Friends,

During these last few weeks of blogging about Women in History, I’ve mentioned women warriors from the past like the grave of the Viking Warrior in Sweden which was discovered in the 1880’s. I added a link to author, Trish Nicholson's book, “A Biography of Story, A Brief History of Humanity” (which includes Her-Story), and to Trish’s blogpost about mythical women in history. She wrote about Celtic fighting women in Gaul, and Irish heroes being taught martial arts by a woman.

One of the timely question Trish asked was,

“Why is a strong resourceful woman with brains and wit cast as such a rarity she is a ‘Wonder Woman’?”

And by an uncanny coincidence, the Wonder Woman movie was back in the news again. In Warner Brother’s new Justice League movie about superheroes saving the world, Wonder Woman’s Amazonian Warriors had a costume makeover. The New York Times, Women in the World website describes the changes as more Baywatch than badass.

“…a curious wardrobe overhaul of the fiercely female Amazon Warriors. One of these things is not like the other…It would seem that the new Justice League issue of Amazonian armor is missing just that: armor. Now, although we know by now that the mythical warriors hail from the island of Themyscira, bikinis would hardly seem to be the logical choice when going to war. One’s organs should probably have some sort of protection beyond metal braziers. After all, just because we’re on a beach doesn’t mean resortwear — no matter how leather studded — should be the only option.”

Watch the Amazons fight in full armor in the beach battle scene from the Wonder Woman movie. Yaass!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Women in History 2 – “The Power of Women’s Stories.”

“Stories going back 5000 years are rife with bold women and female war deities, their role sometimes combined with that of protectress, mother or lover. Heroic women in fiction are not ‘wondrous’. Brave, smart, resourceful, strong – these have always been standard female attributes. It’s the stories that changed, or rather, how the narrative is framed.”—Trish Nicholson,  http://booksbywomen.org/

Hello Friends,

This week I’m continuing the theme of Women in History with a link to a blog post written by Trish Nicholson. Trish is a social anthropologist and author of narrative non-fiction and short stories. She’s written a book, “A Biography of Story, A Brief History of Humanity” which includes finding the hidden her-story.

In her article,  Mythical Women in War and Love , she asks;

“So what happened to convert these images of powerful females into narratives of women as war trophies, victims and the weaker sex? Why is a strong resourceful woman with brains and wit cast as such a rarity she is a ‘Wonder Woman’?”

It’s an interesting article worth a read.

Women in History

“HE was tall. He was powerful. The Viking warrior was buried with sword, spear, shield and battle knives. There was one problem.”(source: www.news.com.au )

HE was a SHE.

Long ago in the 1880’s, the grave of the famous Viking warrior was discovered near the Swedish town of Birka. She was aged in her 30’s. Her burial goods, weapons and warhorses suggest she was an accomplished warrior, perhaps even a military leader. You can read more about the archaeological story here. www.news.com.au

Watch a short video about the mistaken gender of the Viking Warrior.

Hello Friends,

I wondered why some of the experts were surprised that the Viking Warrior was a woman? It got me thinking how women are portrayed or even missing from the history books. So I’ve decided to revisit the posts I’ve written about interesting women from history.

I’ve blogged about the ancient, matriarchal site in New Mexico that has a moon calendar, one of the few places in the world. The grave of a Celtic Priestess. The prehistoric cremated remains of women found at Stonehenge. Terrifying female pirates from the 18th Century. A book written about “The Amazons”—fierce female warriors who smoked pot and put up a good fight.

Women did exist in history, and hopefully more discoveries of forgotten lives will be returned to us over the coming years. Please enjoy my history tour! If you’d like to read more, each article has a link to the blog post.

The Lost & Mysterious Chacaon Civilization is located in an American canyon which was sealed, burnt and abandoned. New research focused on DNA studies of the women buried at the New Mexico site has found the society was led by a "maternal elite" who passed power from female to female, or through a mother-daughter linage from 800-1130 A.D.

Celtic Jewelry Unearthed blog post was about two discoveries of Celtic jewelry.

The first of the golden hoards was found at the grave of the Celtic Priestess in Germany. Her burial chamber is dated as 2,600 years old, and she shared the grave site with a young girl aged about three years and another woman.

The second discovery of Celtic Jewelry came from a farmer’s field in England. The big golden torc was so big, it could have been a belt made to protect a pregnant woman.

Heroines or Villains are the women who broke the mold, and challenged the ‘status quo’ of their societies.

Experts are still piecing together the mystery of Stonehenge. Despite artists portraying prehistoric man as in charge of the site, in the latest discovery, half of the prehistoric, cremated bones belong to women. Could women have been as noteworthy as men in prehistoric Britain?

Once there was a superstitious belief among pirates that having women aboard a ship was bad luck. Meeting Anne Bonny and Mary Read on the high seas would knock the wind out of anybody's sails. The two marauders from the 1700's were the most feared female pirates to raid fishing boats and trading sloops.

Warrior Women The Amazons are the legendary warrior women from the history books. Did they really exist?

“Archaeology shows that these fierce women also smoked pot, got tattoos, killed—and loved—men.”  (source: National Geographic )

Adrienne Mayor from the Princeton University Press has written a book, “The Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women across the Ancient World.”

D.D. Line's Book Review – “The Point of Love” by Monique Mulligan

Hello Friends,

Author, D.D. Line, gave me permission to reblog one of her romance book reviews. I thought it might be an interesting read to add to the pile of Christmas holiday books.

Book Review by D.D. Line….

“The Point Of Love” by Monique Mulligan

The Blurb

New girl in town and journalist, Lexie, has been targeted by developers who want to sell her their vision for a marina at Mangles Bay. On paper, the proposal looks good, but when Hands Off Point Peron spokesman and Thor-lookalike Andrew Fletcher takes her to nearby Point Peron, she starts to have second thoughts.

A date at Penguin Island sets the scene for love, but when Lexie’s front page story about the marina is published, Andrew is far from impressed and wants nothing to do with her. Will Lexie be able to turn the situation around? Or is the story a deal-breaker for Andrew?

With gorgeous coastal settings and laugh-out-loud antics, The Point of Love is like a sweet breath of fresh air for the romantic’s soul.

Lexie is working hard in her journalism career despite the editor-from-hell’s dubious input. She’s chasing all the angles to perfect her first front page story, and if interviewing the sexiest man she’s ever seen is part of the bargain, well, she’s going to pull on her big girl panties and get on with it.

Of course, she never intended flashing said panties, but Thor, er, she means Andrew, doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, he takes her on a wonderful date and shows her why he loves the bay he’s so keen to protect.

But when Lexie’s story is printed, an embarrassed Andrew cuts her off cold. He won’t let Lexi explain. He doesn’t want to hear the truth. With other readers voicing their concerns over her article, Lexie is at a loss what to do. One thing’s for certain, if she wants Andrew back, Lexie must turn the headlines around or risk losing not only her career, but the love of her life too.

I loved the comedic moments, innuendo, and word play. (The story stayed on the sweet side.) I also liked the way it showed how difficult relationships are if the people involved in them aren’t prepared to listen. A fun, humorous, thought provoking story.

“The Point of Love” was published in October 2017, and here’s the link to Amazon.com

Book - "Everything We Need" by Rebecca Raine

Hello Friends,

It’s always a delight when Author Rebecca Raine heats up the blogger site with news of her latest romance book.
“Everything We Need” is the fourth book in the Finding Forever series.

Rebecca writes sassy, sexy and tasteful romance. Her latest book tells the story of a love triangle between Trina and two guys, and how they overcome their struggles to find happiness.

There’s some good book reviews…
“I like how they brought out the best in each other. I also like the fact that the emotions were real and believable.”—Isis Ray-sisco, Goodreads
“Rebecca Raine…Her characters are likable and honest and their struggles are emotionally charged, raw, and heartfelt.”—hmg_vermont, Amazon.com

Here’s the Blurb

The path to true love may not begin with a threesome, but you have to start somewhere.

Trina Carrigan is searching for love. After a lifetime of following her instincts, and getting nowhere, she’s determined to use logic to find her happily-ever-after. Unfortunately, there is nothing logical about her attraction to her new gay flatmate, Jeremy. The sooner she finds her Mr Right, the better.
Jeremy Hayden needs a friend. Still recovering from the isolation of an abusive relationship, he’s struggling to build a new life for himself. He’s delighted to find a friend in Trina, but there’s a catch: he’s not as gay as she thinks he is, and he’s having trouble keeping his hands to himself.
Brady Shaw wants only to be left alone. A moment of weakness has torn his life apart, forcing him to walk away from the remains. His newfound peace is shattered, however, when he discovers the perfect incarnation of all he’s trying to escape living right next door. Jeremy brings to life every craving Brady’s ever denied. Trina makes his broken heart ache to be whole. Caught between the two, Brady finds himself facing a whole new problem. He can’t quite decide whom he wants to seduce first.

“Everything We Need” is available now for the Kindle price of $3.07US and $3.99Aus.

Rebecca kindly provided an excerpt of the story.
(from Chapter 5)

Brady Shaw had never been a fan of meeting new people. If he had his way, the whole world would leave him the hell alone and he would be only too happy to return the favour. That way he could never disappoint anyone and he wouldn’t have anyone to lose. Loneliness was a small price to pay for peace of mind.
Unfortunately, by taking on the job of manager for the apartment building he now called home, he was forced to introduce himself to all the tenants. There were only five other apartments and he’d already visited four of them. That left the couple in the apartment next to his. Their front door was at a right angle to his, and so close he could probably prop both doors open at the same time if he got both hands and a foot involved.
Katrina Carrigan was the name on the lease, but there were definitely two people living there. He had yet to see them, but he’d heard them talking and laughing as they stomped up and down the external stairs.
They hadn’t been home the last time he knocked on their door. Now though, as he mounted the stairs leading to both sets of front doors, Brady could see light filtering through their kitchen window. Someone was home and it was time he got the introductions over with. After a quick stop at his own apartment to pick up a printout of his details, he crossed to his neighbours’ door. All he had to do was give them the sheet of paper and let them know they should come to him if anything in the apartment needed fixing. Then he could go back to his own apartment and commence ignoring them whenever possible.
He gave a firm knock on the door. A male voice swore a blue streak in the apartment beyond and Brady was impressed by the man’s creativity. Apparently, he had bad timing. A quick glance at his watch showed it was a few minutes after nine. Damn. He should have waited till morning to do this, but it was too late to back out now. Two minutes and he’d be gone, anyway.
The door flung open to reveal a woman. Her porcelain skin was flushed, her lips wet and swollen from thorough kissing. “Can I help you?” she asked in a breathy voice. One hand raked through her shoulder-length hair, though the dark strands had already been mussed by someone else’s fingers. “Hello?” A faint crease appeared on her forehead as she watched him stand there gaping like a freaking idiot.
“Hi.” Brady tried desperately to remember what he was supposed to say at this point, but his brain was distracted by the sight of the woman’s hard nipples straining against pale pink cotton as she took deep, calming breaths.
“Hey, buddy.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “My eyes are up here?”
Brady shook his head in an effort to regain some modicum of composure. Katrina was obviously not pleased about being drooled over by a total stranger on her own doorstep. He couldn’t blame her. It wasn’t her fault he had lousy timing. “Right, sorry. You… ah… you took me by surprise.”
She snorted. “Surprises seem to be the theme of the night so…” She fell silent, waiting for him to explain himself.
Clearing his throat, he launched into his prepared introduction. “The name’s Brady. I’ve inherited this building from my uncle and I’m going to be managing the place from now on.” He held out the slip of paper he still had clutched in one hand. “Here are my details. If you ever need anything, if something in the apartment breaks, let me know and I’ll take care of it.” Until now, the thought of any of his tenants actually needing anything from him was enough to make him shudder. Maybe he wouldn’t mind so much if Katrina did the asking.
“Huh,” she said as she took the paper and glanced over it before returning her attention to him. “I’m sorry about your uncle. Were you close?”
“More so recently,” Brady said with a nod. Uncle Ben had been around his whole life, but it was only in the past year he’d gotten to know the older man better. When the shit hit the fan and everyone else in the family started looking at him like a stranger, Uncle Ben had been the one to reach out, inviting him over for a beer, offering an ear if he needed one. Brady would always be grateful for his uncle’s willingness to accept him no matter what. Then, the older man had died unexpectedly of a heart attack. When Brady was told he’d inherited this building, a building no one else in the family seemed to know anything about, it was like the old bugger had been telling him there was a way to escape if he needed one. As soon as the paperwork had been finalised, he took it. He quit his job and disappeared from what little was left of his old life. He didn’t expect to be heading back that way any time soon.
“I usually have to go to the real estate agent if I need anything,” Katrina said now.
Brady had decided to leave the agent in charge of collecting rent and dealing with leases, but take over the maintenance work himself. It would be cheaper, and without the steady income of a regular job, he needed every cent he could get from this place. Starting over wasn’t cheap. To Katrina, he said, “I’ve decided to take a more hands-on approach. From now on, you’ll have to come for me.” It wasn’t until she gave him an amused smirk he realised what he’d said. “To me,” he corrected, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand. “Come to me.”
“The agent never answers their phone and always takes at least two days to call me back.” Her tone was officious, but her eyes teased. “Will you be more reliable?”
“It would be hard not to be,” he said as he gestured to his own front door. “I’ve moved in next to you.”
She gave a little gasp before smiling at him in apparent delight. “Isn’t that handy. You’ll be available any time I want you.” If he hadn’t known better, Brady would’ve thought she was flirting with him. Which made no sense, considering her boyfriend was somewhere inside. And where the hell was he anyway? If Katrina was Brady’s woman, there was no way he’d have her answering the door after dark looking like some teenager’s wet dream. What the hell was the man thinking?
As if reading his thoughts, Katrina turned her head and called, “Jeremy, come meet our new neighbour slash landlord.”
“Do I have to?” The voice that drifted from somewhere further in was tinged with annoyance. Not surprising, considering what these two had obviously been doing when he knocked on the door. Brady swallowed hard and pretended his cock wasn’t twitching at the thought. It had been way too long since he’d been laid.
“Yes, you have to,” Katrina responded.
“Is he hot?”
She looked back at Brady with a grin and winked. “Yes.”
There was a scuffle of feet and then the door opened wider as Katrina’s boyfriend appeared by her side. He was a couple of centimetres taller than Brady. Leaner, but strong. Clear green eyes lit up at the sight of him, despite the shock of brown hair getting in the way. Brady damn near forgot how to breathe.
“Holy crap.” The man laughed as he openly perused Brady from head to boot. “Where the hell have you been?”
Katrina’s brow crinkled. “You two know each other?”
“Not yet, but let’s not rule anything out.” He took a step forward, one hand held out in greeting. “I’m Jeremy Hayden, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Brady lowered his eyes as they shook. His palm twitched at the feel of warm skin. Yeah, that getting laid thing—too fucking long. “Likewise,” he croaked. Clearing his throat, he tried again. “Sorry about interrupting your evening, Katrina, Jeremy,” he said, gesturing to them. “I’ll get out of your hair.” The sooner he got away from these two the better. Even if he spent the remainder of the evening imagining them together, at least in the privacy of his own apartment he wouldn’t have to worry about getting caught doing it.
He’d started to turn away when the sound of Katrina’s voice made him pause. “It’s just Trina,” she said. “It says Katrina on my birth certificate, but everyone calls me Trina.”
He nodded as he caressed the curves of her face with his gaze. “Trina.” It was only a word, nothing more, but the way it came out of his mouth, even he could hear the lust that underpinned his tone—he made her name sound like an invitation. Her feminine intake of breath was an all too eager reply.
Brady swallowed hard as his gaze darted to Jeremy. The other man watched the two of them with eyes that saw too much and Brady thought for sure he’d cop a fist to the face. He’d damn well deserve it too.
Instead, Jeremy gestured to him with one arm. “I think you should come inside, Brady,” he said. “The night is young and I’m making us all coffee. It would be rude if you didn’t drink it.” Without waiting for an answer, he headed around the corner to the nearby kitchen.
Brady shook his head, took a single step backward. “I shouldn’t.” If he’d thought meeting the other tenants was painful, coming face-to-face with these two was an exercise in torture. It was like God and the Devil conspired to create the perfect incarnation of everything he was running away from, and threw them in his face. He already had to live beside them. If he started spending time with them he may implode.
Trina watched him in silence as he stood there staring at her like the indecisive git he was. “You’re welcome to join us,” she told him. “But we’ll understand if you have other things you need to do.”
She was giving him an out, just like Uncle Ben had when he left him this place. He could take it. Go into his apartment and close the door behind him. He could pretend he’d gotten used to being alone, that the darkness he’d hidden in this past year hadn’t become oppressive.
Or he could join his new neighbours for a cup of coffee—and not be alone for a while.
He took a tentative step forward. “Coffee sounds good.”

About “Everything We Need” from Rebecca

The lovely Trina Carrigan has always been a solid part of the Finding Forever series. In Our Little Secret she only managed a mention, as Derek’s younger sister. Lost in Amber saw her first on-page appearance and then, in This Time Forever, she played a major supportive role in the development of Jake and Kelly’s relationship. Trina was single in every book, and I couldn’t help but notice how upset she was getting with the situation. She had to have her own book and her very own happy ending. In fact, I loved Trina so much I felt the need to give her two heroes to enjoy on her journey towards love.

About Rebecca Raine

Rebecca is a long-time lover of all things romance. Whether it’s a book, movie, or real-life, she will always have more fun if there’s a love interest thrown into the mix. She lives in Queensland, Australia with her very own hero husband, two adorable children and one big, black dog. Other than reading and writing books, her favourite things include loud music, enjoying a glass of wine on the patio, organising everything in existence, and spending too much time on the Internet.

Congratulations to Rebecca for the launch of her fifth book and growing readership! I’m not sure if there are more books to come in the "Finding Forever" series, but hopefully it will be a short time before we find out.
