Movie - "Black Panther"

Hello Friends,

The Black Panther movie is superb. It’s an adventure, a fantasy with Sci-Fi. I liked the African story, characters, cinematography, costumes and lively soundtrack of drum beats.

T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) is a good man and he returns home to become King of a special African nation, and also the next Black Panther in the line of succession. His straight forward plans are interrupted when two different men challenge him for the kingship. One of the men has deliberate intentions to start the next world war.

T’Challa must fight for his legacy and protect his country from harm. He’s going down. And there were heart-stopping moments when his enemies got the better of him.

The challenge for kingship.

Fortunately, T’Challa has a group of amazing women in his life. His mother, sister, the woman he loves, the greatest warrior of the nation, and a team of all-female body guards. They surround him, support him, think and act independently of him, and ultimately save him so he can fulfil his destiny.

From L to R, Shuri (Sister), Nakia (Love Interest), Ramonda (Mother) & CIA agent

Ramonda (Angela Bassett) is the matriarch and mother in pain who doesn’t give up on her son, T’Challa. She has a dignified presence on screen as she collaborates with the other women.

Shuri (Letitia Wright), sister of T’Challa, is a Geeky Boss of Technology. Adorable, funny, lights up the movie screen, I want to hang out with her and learn all about the nation’s technology that’s housed in a tower headquarters.

A mind-blowing moment for me featuring Shuri was when they projected a hologram of a pilot into a fight scene with spaceships for him to shoot them down. It was multi-dimensional science and reality.

I liked that Shuri could use technology to heal people completely, rather than the familiar use for the destruction of people.

Entrance to Black Panther Cave with Technology Tower HQ above it & spaceships.
Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) is a fierce warrior, spy, a woman with a mission to fight for the oppressed. She is the woman T’Challa loves and wants to make her his queen. Lupita Nyong’o was radiant in this role, her beauty glowed and her skills and independence was a triumph.

Okoye, Nakia & Dora Milaje Warrior.
Okoye (Danai Gurira), is the General, the greatest warrior of the nation, and member of the Dora Milaje, the all-female protection squad.

Okoye seemed to me, to be principled, well-trained, and her reflexes were lightning fast. She was athletic and graceful. Her rich red costumes were glorious. I laughed when she threw her uncomfortable wig of brown hair at a bad guy in a South Korean casino. Another high point for me was Okoye clinging to the top of a car during a chase scene through the streets of South Korea, and refusing to give up a fight. Her loyalty was beyond question.

Choosing your next Romance Read

“Romance has often been the only place in media where women can see themselves at the center of the story triumphing. … There’s a lot of power in happily ever after. In 2017, I think many of us came to a place where we realized that the best way for us to resist was for us to tell stories where we win, and the best way to show the other side that we will survive them is to show ourselves in happiness ... because happiness is torture in its own way.”
—Sarah McLean, Washington Post columnist and romance novelist.

Steamy Romance Reads

Hello Friends,

Romance is in the news this month, and women who like sex and want to read about it are rocking the romance genre.

Don’t judge a lady’s taste by her age…

“Just because she is defined as a grandmother doesn’t mean she wants her romances without the hot sex.”

Jo Grant, Mills & Boon’s Global Editorial Director, source: www.news.com.au

During this last week, I’ve read two articles about changes to romance fiction and writer’s views on love and sex at an Australian news site, here and here

The lowdown is that nice guy, romance heroes have jettisoned the alpha males and alpha holes off the page. Heroines have outgrown the passive damsels with the heaving bosoms (????) caricature. She has become feisty, confident and is pursuing a fulfilling life.

Romance novels are Australia’s steamiest secret. Readers still love racy romance with happy endings.

E-books are bought to read the raunchy stuff and paperback for the sweet romances. Four steamy’s are purchased for every sweet. Ah-huh! It’s a buffet of heat levels.

But it seems Australian readers are following a sexy trend which is bigger than the land down under. Mills & Boon, one of the world’s major romance publishing houses, are launching a new category of books called DARE. It’s their hottest series featuring empowered, fun and fearless women with the sexiest men. Modern storylines are steamy, and might appeal to ladies of all ages, including the grandmothers and young women.

Watch the short promo video.

Happy reading,
and
Happy Valentine’s Day!

February 2018 is Romance Month

falling in love,
being in love,
love until the last breath.

Who would you like to cosy up to this Valentine’s Day?

Hello Friends,

February is the month I like to post articles about anything romance, books and love. Yet, this last year, I’ve been rocked by the news cycle of abusive behavior, assault and protest marches. The time has come for listening, learning, changing the rules and healing.

The cultural shifts will scour a new path for human relationships. I wondered if women would want to keep reading fantasies stories that pivot around hope, happiness and love. Have romance novels become too unrealistic and escapist compared to everyday life? Could I keep writing romance novels during this intense era of purging pain, trauma and brokenness?

picturequotes.com
I once read a comment that when real-life is overwhelming, for example, when new military invasions are in the news or wars start, some romance readers leave their contemporary novels and retreat to historical romances…to a different world.

One day recently, I followed the trend without realizing it until afterward. The world news of nuclear missiles possibly being fired across continents terrified me, I dived into reading a regency romance. I love the scoundrel dukes.

Then I dusted off my Victorian age romance manuscript and poured through the chapters to see if the writing was a bunch of rubbish. Nope, I found it was still patiently waiting for some rewrites and the big edit. Oh and the Duke was scandalous, and his lordly son, was a blackguard. Fortunately, the spirited heroine had the measure of both captivating men.

I decided to keep believing in romance and love as a force for good.

The need to express love for another person and be loved in return is unlikely to fade to nothing. Love gives meaning to our lives. Fills our heart. Feeds our soul. Our mission is love.

I’m not ignoring the news or the revolution, but romance novels are my favorite antidote to a real-world roiling with confusion and transformation.

“Oh no. Don’t smile. You’ll kill me. I stop breathing when you smile.”
--Tessa Dare, A Lady of Persuasion*

“Romance novels are birthday cake and life is often peanut butter and jelly. I think everyone should have lots of delicious romance novels lying around for those times when the peanut butter of life gets stuck to the roof of your mouth.”
--Janet Evanovich*
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

“Reading a romance novel is indulging yourself in happiness.”
--Sarah Wendell’s Book, “Everything I know about Love I learned from Romance Novels.”

So this month, why not straddle worlds, open a romance book and read about;
Marriages of conveniences and second chances.
Heartfelt and deserving love.
Sizzling sex and steamy resolutions….
and happy endings.

Oh yeah!

Have a lovely weekend,
Ashlyn
