Book – “All the Broken Pieces” by Rebecca Raine

Hello Friends,

Australian romance author, Rebecca Raine is back on the blogger with her latest book in the Finding Forever series. Her book covers raises the temperature and lights up the page. “All the Broken Pieces” is no exception. It’s a different type of story to her last one, and features two men who fall in love. I was naturally curious about Rebecca’s latest release, so I asked her a couple of questions which she was happy to answer.

What inspired you to write this book?

Rebecca: I wasn't inspired to write this book so much as I was forced to write it... by Harrison. It went something like this: Jeremy was first introduced as a main character in “Everything We Need” (Book 4 of the Finding Forever series).

In that book he (spoilers ahead) embarked on a steamy relationship with his flatmate, Trina, and their next-door neighbour, Brady. While Jeremy learned a great deal from that relationship, it was Trina and Brady who ultimately fell in love and became a couple at the end of the book. However, Jeremy did return in the epilogue with his new boyfriend, Harrison.

We only got a glimpse into their relationship in that book, but it was sweet and I loved them as a couple. That was supposed to be where the series ended. Harrison, however, really didn’t like the idea that Jeremy’s journey to true love wasn’t going to be told and he kept tapping me on the shoulder and saying, “Do you have any idea what we went through to be together?”

I had to admit, I didn’t. So, I decided to write a short story to detail Jeremy and Harrison’s romance. That short story ended up being the longest book in the series. It was worth every moment.

Could you tell us about the MM theme in the book?

Rebecca: When I started writing romance novels it never occurred to me I would ever write anything other than heterosexual romances between couples. Then I got the idea for the first book in this series, “Our Little Secret” (an MMF romance), and suddenly I was dealing, not just with three people, but with a homosexual relationship as well. I loved every minute of it! After that it seemed like the world opened up and nothing was off limits (in my writing or in my reading).

So, when Harrison started to get pushy I knew it was time for my first MM couple romance. Harrison and Jeremy were the perfect couple to get me started. I'm as in love with them as they are with each other!

Your characters have some personal challenges with heartache, losing their minds, and you’re a brave author for writing them into a romance. Were there any experiences you drew on, or people who influenced you to write about the grittier side of life?

Rebecca: Mental illness is such a huge part of our society, but is still hidden in many ways. Often people who suffer from a mental illness will be reluctant to talk about it for fear of being seen as 'weak' due to their struggle to accomplish tasks that others do with ease.

I never consciously decided to write about a character with a mental illness, but when I was first getting to know Harrison and realised he suffered from ongoing episodic depression I ran with it.

Going deep into Harrison depression was challenging, and at times upsetting. I drew from both my own experiences and lots of internet research. The most important thing for me was to show the strength that is developed when a person constantly strives to rise up under the weight of their depression or anxiety and build a happy, meaningful life. That's Harrison. Despite his mental illness, and in many ways because of it, he is an incredibly strong person with a high level of self-awareness.

He's determined to make his good days outweigh his bad days, and when he lays eyes on Jeremy, he knows there are some pretty awesome days ahead.

Will there be any more books in the series?

Rebecca: No. Absolutely not. :) The Finding Forever series is officially complete and I am now working on other projects. Anyone for a rock star romance?

Rebecca kindly provided an excerpt of the story.
(from Chapter 5)
“I’m curious now. What happened?”
Jeremy pushed his plate away and sat back, settling deeper into the cushions. “Those stories aren’t…”
“First date material?” He watched as Jeremy bit down on that bottom lip, as if he wanted to say something but wasn’t sure if he should. “Except this isn’t a date,” he guessed.
“It’s not supposed to be.” Jeremy pulled his legs up, crossing them in front of him. His left thigh came to rest on top of Harrison’s bent knee. “But it’s not exactly your average business dinner either.”
“I suppose we need to come up with a third option.” Unable to resist the urge, Harrison sat forward and lifted his hand from the back of the couch so he could run his fingers through the short hair at the nape of Jeremy’s neck. Jeremy’s eyes slid shut as he exhaled, and Harrison’s body hardened at the innate sensuality of the response. Patience may be a virtue, but his supply was fast running out. “I have to be honest though, if all you’re after is a hook-up, it’s not really my style.”
Opening his eyes, Jeremy looked at him. His expression, though heated, was wary—almost reluctant. “I like you, Harrison. You’re easy to talk to and being around you makes me feel good. So…” Jeremy turned his body in the small space, moving closer and curling his own hand around the back of Harrison’s neck. “I would like to get to know you better, but I can’t make any promises about being ready for something more. Right now, that’s the most I can offer.”
Harrison considered his words for a moment before nodding in agreement. “That’s good enough for me.”
The grin that appeared on Jeremy’s face sparked a light somewhere deep inside Harrison’s chest. Though scarcely a glimmer, it warmed him from the inside, made him want more.
“Well, what do you know?” Jeremy murmured, tilting his head to one side. “The man does know how to smile.”
Harrison blinked as he reached up with his free hand to touch his own cheeks. Jeremy was right. His mouth had curved of its own accord, reflecting the pleasure he’d seen in the other man. He couldn’t remember how long it had been since that happened.
Long fingers replaced his, stroking the roughness of his jaw and cupping his chin. Jeremy leaned in to kiss him and Harrison closed his eyes as he waited for that first touch. It was scary how much he wanted this—to taste the sunshine of this man’s mouth, to make the light inside burn brighter.
The moment their lips met, Harrison reached out to cup Jeremy’s face in his hands. Their mouths moved slowly against each other, hesitantly, every moment a torturous blend of holding back and letting go. Then, Jeremy ran his tongue along Harrison’s bottom lip and Harrison opened his mouth in invitation. Jeremy slipped inside, tasting him with infinite care—with patience. The thought roused a hidden part of him that never would have responded to a stronger, more frenzied passion.
When Jeremy withdrew from the kiss he did so in small degrees, drawing out each languid touch, until at last they parted. Harrison opened his eyes and saw Jeremy watching him closely. The light in Jeremy’s eyes gleamed bright and joyful when he murmured, “Sweet enough for you?”
A breathy sound erupted from Harrison’s chest, almost like a laugh, and he startled.
Jeremy’s true laugh followed close behind. “I’ll take that as a yes.” Pulling away, Jeremy stood and then turned back to offer Harrison his hand. “Come on,” he said with a smile. “I’ll let you drive me home.”

Movie - "Ocean's 8"

Hello Friends,

The Ocean’s 8 movie is the latest release in the Ocean’s franchise. The heist plan in the movie was so clever and almost flawless. The team of actresses were a pleasure to watch. The fun in this movie is watching the team doing the crime, amidst the fashion and glamour of New York’s Met Gala Ball. I wished the plot was grittier, and harder for the women squad to steal the diamonds. I’m not complaining. Ocean’s 8 was an entertaining film and worth watching for its hustling ladies.

The Characters and Actresses of the Ocean’s Eight Team were;

Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) – the Boss lady. She spent five years in jail planning a jewel heist, and she puts together a team of mostly women to do the crime.

Lou Miller (Cate Blanchett) – partner in crime and with on-screen chemistry. A tough-ish character. Mesmerizing, I couldn’t stop watching her choppy blonde fringe tease her eyelashes. I liked her fashion credo.

Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) – insecure beauty, celebrity diva and crime victim almost to the end of the movie, and then she turns bad.

Rose Weil (Helena Bonham Carter) - fashion designer, who wears punkish Victorian age costumes. Wonderfully Britishly.

Nine Ball (Rihanna) – computer hacker, just great at breaking into systems and checking out someone else’s CCTV security cameras. All the while she looks cool working at her desk located in the back of a halal van. I join other commentaters wishing Rihanna had more screen time and character development in the movie.

Constance (Awkwafina) – street con with slippery fingers. A pickpocket specialist. Awesome Awkwafina.

Amita (Mindy Kaling) – jeweler who fights with her mother and wants a new life. In a tiny room—a toilet stall, and with the clock ticking, she can pull apart a $150 million diamond necklace like it’s a lego set. Calm under pressure goddess.

Tammy (Sarah Paulson) – homemaker with a shady past. She’s persuaded to leave behind party planning and returns to making money the crooked way.

Romance Book Covers

Hello Friends,

Have you ever purchased a book just because you liked the cover?
Guilty!

I have a favorite book cover from an Anna Campbell (Australian Author) Historical Romance that I couldn’t resist. I enjoyed reading the story too. Anna has such a flair with words…and much more...

Only the reader knows if they like/love the look of a book. Romance covers have changed from physical books on a shelf to finger flipping a digital page. Now we can buy both paper and electronic print.

Covers are designed to catch the eye and capture a reader’s interest. The cover has a certain feel to it, and invokes expectations of the story inside.

Will Davies, the Canadian illustrator who I wrote about in my post last week was intent on making art to sell romance fantasies and with illusions of glamour. Women’s taste in impossibly attractive romance hero models, wearing clothes, or without, and having some show of virility and sensuality have evolved with the times.

Covers are diversifying, and maybe there’s just a heroine in the artwork or no people at all.

Eliza Thompson from Cosmopolitan Magazine has written an article, “How the covers of your favorite romance novels get made.”

"It takes a lot of work to get those swoony poses right.

Romance novels are delightful for many reasons, but as any true fan knows, the fun starts before you even open the book – with the cover."

Vintage Portraits - A Stamp of Love

 Art on Romance Book Covers
Book Covers as romantic paintings.
An era passed and an artist remembered.

Hello Friends,

Do you like the new stamp from Canada?
Swoony love.
Imagine Michael Bublé singing in the background, “Dance with me, sway with me…”
Oh yeah, take me there!

In April 2018, Canadian artist, Will Davies was honored posthumously with the issue of a stamp featuring his art from a Harlequin Romance Book Cover.

The artwork has a vintage look to me and with a sprinkle of Hollywood glamour from decades ago. The couple dance intimately, almost cheek to cheek. He’s a tall dark and handsome romance hero wearing a white dinner jacket. He reminds me of actor, Cary Grant with his chiseled face and classy grooming.

She’s a raven-haired beauty, wearing a 1970’s caftan dress, perhaps it’s a holiday outfit for an exotic, Caribbean Island. Her heart-shaped face reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor, while her elfin hair-do is reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn.

Will Davies’s artwork which was reproduced on the celebratory stamp was originally used as a bookcover for a romance novel called, “Neptune’s Daughter” which was written by Anne Weale and published by Harlequin in 1987.

The author passed away in 2007. She had an adventurous life with her husband and son. She loved setting her stories in the Caribbean and in her beloved Spain. She wrote 88 novels and published her last novel in 2002.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover the 31 year old novel was listed on Goodreads, and had some reviews.

“…you might see a stranger across a crowded room…”

When Laurian saw the tall handsome man browsing in the bookshop, the lyrics of the romantic old song came instantly to mind. For this was what it was like: the sudden burst of attraction, the odd sense of recognition.

So when the man followed her out of the store and down the street, Laurian was certain he felt the same way. She wasn’t in the habit of talking to strangers, but this was different. So she did.

And found out his name. Oliver Thornham. A name from her past, and one she had every reason to hate.

Will Davies produced artwork for 500 Harlequin book covers and he painted 2 or 3 covers each month for years.

The era passed when Harlequin changed artistic direction for their book covers and they went for real life images featuring photographs of models. But as I found out on Pinterest and Goodreads, there's still people on the web collecting Harlequin book covers and also reading the decades old books.

From the 1950’s to the early 2000’s, Will Davies had a long career as an illustrator. He also produced commercial art for newspapers and magazines. Other designs he worked on included cars, clothes, and he designed nine stamps.

If you’d like to see more Art of Will Davies, a book has been published and there is a facebook page, see it here .

Data Privacy

Photo by arvin febry on Unsplash
Hello Friends,

The new European Union Privacy Laws called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect on 25 May 2018. I felt compelled to write about data privacy on my blog site and to remind people to check that their privacy settings are right for them.

Regular Blogger
I use a standard Blogger theme template on this site. There’s no fancy designer stuff, and I don’t use any add-ins, plug-ins or what-ever-ins to monitor or analyse visitor usage of my blogspot. This regular, long-form Blogger site has served me well for the last 3 years while I have been writing in the cyber wilderness, and trying to attract a crowd. Thank you to all the people who drop by and read my articles. I have grown into blogging and enjoy the weekly challenge of finding something interesting to write about.

Third Parties
I have no third party advertisements running here like of the ad-sense variety. I do have images of my bookcovers, and a link to Amazon.com. But I am not an affiliate of Amazon and I don’t earn any money other than elusive book sales. I would love to have some amazing amazon book sales! Maybe I need to publish lots of books to improve the $$$…well…2 novellas and a short read are my earnest beginnings.

Google Plus
Each week, on a Friday evening (Australian time), I post my blogger articles to my Google Plus page called Ashlyn Brady (Author). In times past, I did repost my writing to facebook, twitter and pinterest but I found having numerous social media sites active reduced the time I had left to write. And I did lose lots of hours, distracted, curious and scrolling through pages and pages of cyber news and biz.

Youtube
I write blog articles with the view to entertaining readers or to give them some light-hearted moments. Sometimes I try to be funny! The common themes I write about are romance, romance books, movies, history and mysteries. If there is a youtube video that compliments my post, then I like to embed the video in the blog.

Google provides me with this Blogger and my Google site free of charge. I wouldn’t be able to continue blogging if I had to pay hosting fees because I don’t earn enough money from my published books. I appreciate the free service offered by Google and I have accepted that Google collects data from my social media sites in exchange for the no-cost hosting.

I urge readers to review their own situation with data privacy, if you haven’t done so already.

Google have updated their privacy policy about what information they collect and why they collect it. They’ve taken steps to improve their privacy checkup and other controls they provide to safeguard data and protect privacy. There are updates on the options to update, manage, export and delete data.

Finally, I would like to assure readers that I don’t personally collect or store data about them.

Thanks for reading,
