Paris Bone Crypts 5 – Wine Thieves

To Catch A Thief!
Hello Friends,
This week I’m posting my final article for the year about mysterious goings-on at the Paris Bone Crypts. In August 2017, the catacombs located beneath the city of Paris were used as a means to break into a vault stocked with a collection of vintage wines. Using the underground tunnels, thieves drilled a hole through the limestone rock and into the wall of a basement wine cellar.
They stole up to 300 bottles of wine valued at €250,000, in Paris' 6th Arrondissement – near the Luxembourg gardens. Afterwards they retreated back into the dark maze of tunnels below the ground.
The owner was away from the property at the time. Due to the accuracy of the wine cellar break-in, Police suspect the heist was carefully planned.
In the video below, explorer Steve Duncan ventures into the catacombs built in the 1850’s. He says Parisians once used the tunnel from the old limestone mine to go back and forth. Maybe the wine thieves used similar tunnels to carry out their crime.
Would you dig down in search of a complete skull bone?

Paris Bone Crypt 4 - Two Lost Teenagers

Hello Friends,

In June 2017, two teenagers became lost in the Paris Bone Crypts. It was three days before rescue dogs found them. They were taken to hospital and treated for hypothermia caused by the cold, damp conditions inside the catacombs.

Not much information is known about how and why the boys were in the crypts. But you can imagine they had a horror-filled stay. Becoming lost in the dark, narrow passageways, and unable to find their way out. Surrounded by the bones of six million people, and wondering whether they would soon join the “Empire of the Dead - Arrête! C’est ici l’empire de la Mort”, that's located beneath Paris.

Apparently, “Dark Tourism” is a trend around the world. People seek out places of death and deathly things. Shudders!

Have a good week everyone.

Paris Bone Crypt 3 - The Hawaiian Surfer

The Gates of Hell – Barrière d’Enfer
Don’t do this!

In October 2016, Alison Teal went down to the forbidden parts of the catacombs.
The oxygen was thin.
She followed secret passageways.
Crawled on all fours over skeletons,
to be the first person to surf the Paris Crypts.

The catacombs which are dug into the limestone bedrock beneath Paris, are one of the world’s largest graves. I posted about the history of the the bone mausoleums last year, you can read the article here.

Alison Teal from Hawaii, is a film-maker and she believes in education through adventure. She’s been called an Indiana Jane. A lot of planning went into her crypt trip. She went with expert cavers as guides.

In the middle of the night, she climbed down a drain and over bones to reach the deepest part of the catacombs at 150 metres. The air was suffocating. The skulls smelt bad. The water was freezing. Alison unloaded her surfboard, and dressed in her bikini, she paddled around the crypt tunnels.

It was a dangerous adventure. The water levels rose in the narrow passageways. Alison had terrifying moments and they had to stop filming. Despite being left shaken, surfing the crypts was a life-threatening and life-changing experience for her.

Here’s a short video of Alison’s surfing adventure.

Have a good week everyone.

2017 October Highlights - Strange & Spooky Things

Hello Friends,

October is Halloween month and the time that I like to blog about strange and spooky things. This year, I will be revisiting the Paris Crypts to write several posts about the place of the long dead that's located beneath the city of Paris. Since my last catacomb article in 2016, people have made the news for surfing the tunnels, an act of stealing and getting lost. Macabrely fascinating.

But first, let’s travel back in history for a brief look at the origins of Halloween. To help get in the mood, here’s a spooky, atmospheric tune called, “Dark Music-The Sealed Kingdom” by Adrian von Ziegler.

Halloween celebrations started with the ancient Celtic people. They lived on the land, farmed, and were close to nature. The Celts followed the earth mother’s wheel of the year.

Halloween was known as Samhain. The celebration occurred during the time of the last harvest at the end of summer. The death of things. A time for the earth mother to rest. She would come to new life in spring. Samhain marked the Celtic new year on the calendar.

Samhain became the festival of the dead. Honoring the dead. The rebirth through death.

I hope you can join me again.
Enjoy your weekend,
Ashlyn

MORE Strange & Spooky POSTS

In October 2015, I blogged about the Paris Bone Crypt, and it became a popular post. Why do people like spooky stuff? Macabre, creepy things like graveyards. Listening to and telling stories about ghosts. Investigating haunted houses. Is the Zombie Apocalypse coming soon?...

To those people who celebrate Halloween, the scare fest is coming soon.
What is the scariest movie you’ve ever watched? I don’t mind admitting I’m a big chicken when it comes to watching horror movies...

Over the millennia, Egypt’s enigmatic Great Pyramid of Giza has withstood robbers and earthquakes. In 1798, during the troubled times of the revolution, the French Government sent a young, ambitious general on a military expedition to Egypt. Napoleon Bonaparte’s great curiosity would lead him to the archaic Great Pyramid.

What a group of prospective home buyers didn’t know was that they were inspecting the house where the horror film was set...

Welcome back to spooky, 19th Century England.
‘Twas in the Victorian age that all manner of ghastly and ghostly things were happened upon by the innocent and the curious...

With Halloween coming at the end of October, I thought I would spend the month blogging about strange and spooky entertainment. I’m going to write mainly about books and movies, some new, some old, and some that haven’t lost their weird appeal over the years...
