Hello Friends,
Have you ever purchased a book just because you
liked the cover?
Guilty!
I have a favorite book cover from an Anna Campbell
(Australian Author) Historical Romance that I couldn’t resist. I enjoyed reading
the story too. Anna has such a flair with words…and much more...
Only the reader knows if they like/love the look
of a book. Romance covers have changed from physical books on a shelf to finger
flipping a digital page. Now we can buy both paper and electronic print.
Covers are designed to catch the eye and capture
a reader’s interest. The cover has a certain feel to it, and invokes
expectations of the story inside.
Will Davies, the Canadian illustrator who I
wrote about in my post last week was intent on making art to sell romance
fantasies and with illusions of glamour. Women’s taste in impossibly attractive
romance hero models, wearing clothes, or without, and having some show of
virility and sensuality have evolved with the times.
Covers are diversifying, and maybe
there’s just a heroine in the artwork or no people at all.

Eliza Thompson from Cosmopolitan Magazine has
written an article, “How the covers of your favorite romance novels get made.”
"It
takes a lot of work to get those swoony poses right.
Romance
novels are delightful for many reasons, but as any true fan knows, the fun
starts before you even open the book – with the cover."
